Most desk drawers run on metal slides. Ours do not - they run on solid wood runners cut and fitted by hand. It is a slower way to build a drawer and a harder one to get right, and it is the decision that shaped everything else about this desk. Here is how it is made, and why.
Why we build the drawer without metal
A metal slide is cheap, fast to install and works well for about a decade. Then the ball bearings wear, the drawer starts to sag, and there is nothing to repair - you replace the mechanism or live with it. On a piece meant to outlast its owner that is the wrong trade.
A wooden runner works differently. Two strips of oak, waxed and fitted to a tolerance of under a millimetre, carry the drawer directly. There is nothing to fail. If the fit loosens after thirty years, it can be re-waxed or shimmed in an afternoon. It is also silent - a wooden drawer closes with a sound most people notice immediately.
The cost is time. Fitting a pair of runners takes far longer than screwing in a slide, and each drawer has to be fitted to its own desk rather than assembled from stock parts.
The oak inlays in the legs
Look closely at where a leg meets the frame and you will see a thin strip of oak set across the joint. It is not decoration added afterwards - it is a key, cut into both parts to lock them against each other. The joint holds without it, but the inlay stops any movement over decades of seasonal expansion.
We left it visible rather than hiding it. In this tradition the joint is part of the design: you should be able to see how a piece is held together. It is also the honest way round - a joint you can inspect is a joint the maker is willing to stand behind.
From sketch to prototype
The desk started as hand sketches, and the part that took longest was not the look but the proportions of the legs. Too thick and the whole piece reads as heavy; too slim and it moves under load. The version we make now is the result of building the frame several times over until it was both visually light and genuinely rigid.
The top overhangs slightly and the legs rise just above its surface - a small detail that makes the top appear to float rather than sit. It came out of the prototypes, not the drawings.
Why solid oak, and what the finish does
Oak is hard, dimensionally stable and ages well - it darkens slowly rather than greying. Every board is different, so no two desks are identical; the grain is chosen and matched by hand across the top before anything is glued.
The finish is oil-wax rather than lacquer, and that choice matters more than it sounds. Lacquer forms a film: when it scratches, the repair is the whole surface. Oil-wax sits in the wood, so a mark can be sanded and re-waxed on a single patch. It is what makes a thirty-year life practical rather than theoretical.
What customers notice first
Two things come up again and again in what people write to us: the drawer, and the absence of visible hardware. The leather pull is recessed so there is no rivet on the front face, and there are no screws anywhere on the outside of the piece. It is the kind of detail nobody asks for in advance and everybody mentions afterwards.
The desk is not just a functional object for us. It is where our approach to design becomes visible - respect for traditional craft, and for the material itself.
